Officially Two Years Left

I’m officially down to two years left before my earliest release date and I’m already making the assumption that I will be getting out on January 8th, 2026. I have no intention on staying even 5 minutes longer than I need.

I got a message from the mailroom here at RDU saying that a letter from my wife was rejected because it was too heavy. Apparently it also contained messages from my kids and the combination of those elements meant that the letter was not allowed. It was then my responsibility to determine what was to happen to the letter at this point. I could have it destroyed and never find out what my precious children had wanted to say to their father, or I could appeal the decision for it to be restricted and face arguing with Topeka for the next 10 weeks about this only to have it denied just because they can and will. Or, I can send it back home at my expense. That was the option I went with because what else can you do? I will want to read this letter someday.

This whole issue of letters and messages getting to inmates in a timely manner and making sure they are appropriate and that they are not containing anything contraband is a joke. KDOC needs to do better. If you are a sex offender you are automatically denied just about everything that has to do with children, including messages that simply mention that your children love you and miss you. How is that an inappropriate message, especially when their lone caregiver, their mother, has sent the message and is sending it with her stamp of approval. Absolutely insane!
